PHYSICAL EDUCATION FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Completion of previous year health and physical education curriculum
Grades: 7-12
The focus of the Physical Education program is to develop and educate the students through motivational physical activities in order to promote physical, mental and social wellness.
The completion of the Health, Safety and Physical Education program is a New Jersey State Requirement as a prerequisite to graduation. The Physical Education program is a requirement for each year the student is in attendance – grades nine through twelve. The program following the guidelines set forth by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Health and Physical Education.
Physical Fitness is emphasized throughout the curriculum with activities geared toward developing the health-related fitness components of flexibility, muscular strength and endurance as well as anaerobic and aerobic capacity. Units such as Step Class, Speed and Agility, and Weight and Resistance-band Training are offered to meet the above mentioned fitness components. Physical fitness levels are measured three times each year by a standardized testing program. Scores are recorded and kept for the duration of the student’s high school tenure for comparison and self-evaluation.
Team sports are offered with the emphasis on gross and fine motor skill development, as well as to foster social interaction. General rules, regulations, team and movement concepts are reinforced along with problem solving and decision making to combine with our intra-school disciplines.
The Health Education portion of the program explores “Integrated Health Skills” as defined by the New Jersey Standards. Each portion of the health curriculum is one marking period in length and is integrated into the overall grade as one quarter of the full grade. Classes are taught in a group setting to enhance peer leadership and learning. Innovative teaching methods such as power point and smart board are utilized to adapt to modern teaching technology.
HEALTH 7
The purpose of the seventh grade health curriculum is to educate the students about social, mental and physical health/wellness. This class discusses the importance of healthy eating habits, active lifestyles and the dangers of eating disorders. The course also includes stress management, peer pressure and stereotypes related to a school setting. An introduction into HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention is also discussed.
HEALTH 8
The purpose of the eighth grade health curriculum is to provide an understanding of the natural processes of the body, as well as to give factual support to reproduction and sexuality. The course provides young people with a knowledge base and assortment of skills necessary to make informed choices. Knowledge about how to avoid sexually transmitted infections that endanger one’s health and well being as well as that of a partner is an important component of instruction. Addressing Reproduction/Sexuality is an appropriate and factual fashion leads to informed young people, increasing the likelihood of students making healthy decisions. Topics that are generally covered include male and female reproductive systems, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, HIV and AIDS along with the child birth process.
HEALTH 9
The freshman health curriculum focuses on First Aid and injury prevention. The course will include the value of a safe and healthy life-style. It attempts to alert students to behavior and situations that contribute to risk of injury and illness and to motivate them to take precautions. They will identify ways to prevent injury and illness, recognize when an emergency has occurred and provide basic care for injury or sudden illness until the victim can receive professional medical help.
HEALTH 10/DRIVER EDUCATION (Theory)
This course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction in the fundamentals of driving which provides the foundation for the knowledge exam portion of the State Graduated Driver License program as set forth by the New Jersey State Motor Vehicle Commission. The course stresses safety, courtesy, driving laws, insurance and awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving and proper driving techniques.
HEALTH 11
The junior health curriculum emphasizes knowledge and understanding of various sexually transmitted diseases, alertness to sexual behaviors, abstinence, contraception, pregnancy and birth. The course will also educate the students about drug and alcohol use, misuse and abuse, heart disease, as well as AIDS awareness. Class topics will also include decision making skills relating to pose-high school life such as living arrangements, relationships and overall independence.
HEALTH 12/FAMILY LIFE
The twelfth grade program stresses the responsibilities of the individual through the family life education program. Relationships, marriage and parenting are explored in depth as are the topics of rape prevention, mental illness and adult care. HIV/AIDS education is taught with the use of guest speakers from various public and private agencies. Student portfolios that include group and individual projects, as well as traditional tests, are the basis for assessment of learning at this level. The benefits of organ and tissue donating and the process for becoming a donor will be re-addressed during this course.
