and the following places for the latest updates:

-  Emergency school closings will be announced between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM

- The police sound the local alarm at 7:00 AM and again at 7:30 AM

- The PTO has acquired the services of a company called “Calling Post“ who will be

contacting families, beginning at 6:00am, in the event of a school closing or delayed

opening due to inclement weather conditions.  It is imperative that the school have

your most up-to-date contact information.  However, you should not rely solely on

   this phone call.

MORNING ARRIVAL PROCEDURES

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:10am, unless they are in the Breakfast Program or meeting with a teacher.

Students must line-up in the schoolyard (weather permitting).  During inclement weather, line-up will take place in the gymnasium.

TARDINESS

A day of absence will be attained for every (6) tardies.  Students arriving late to school must obtain a “Late Pass” from the office in order not to be marked absent for the day.  To ensure safety, please escort students in grades K – 2 to the office, unless escorted by an older sibling.

Any efforts to promote being on time for classroom instruction are appreciated.

ABSENCE

Notify the school in the event your child is absent, by calling the Main Office at (201)342-6446.  Upon returning to school after an absence, a written excuse must be provided.  The excuse should consist of a note from the parent or guardian or from a doctor, indicating date(s) of absence(s) and, the reason.  All notes should be submitted to the office upon arrival to school after an absence.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

A student must be in attendance a minimum of 164 days to be eligible for promotion.  A student absent more than 16 days of school is liable for the penalties of this policy regardless if the absences are excused or unexcused.   Class periods missed through tardiness to school, absence from school or early dismissal will be counted as absences.  Non-chargeable absences will not count.  Although a student may satisfactorily complete the grade level, he/she may not be promoted if the attendance requirement is not fulfilled.

Respecting a student’s right to an education, the following plan of action utilizes due process and constructive measures of rehabilitation:

days of absence

action taken

4th Day

Letter to parent/guardian of student.

8th Day

Letter sent to parent/guardian of student.  Administrative contact with student and parent/guardian.  Guidance Counselor notified.

12th Day

Letter sent to parent/guardian of student.  Parent/student will be required to meet/conference with the Principal.

16th Day

Meet/conference; notification will be sent by certified mail to the parent/guardian informing them that their child has reached the limit in absences.  Superintendent notified.

17th Day

Notification will be sent by certified mail to the parent/guardian informing them of the student’s promotion status.  The parent/guardian will have five (5) school days in which to appeal the promotion status in writing to the Principal.

HEALTH POLICIES

Administering Medicines to Students

Children who need medication during school hours are required to have a form completed and signed by the physician and parent in order for the school nurse to administer the medication.  Please call the school nurse and request the complete medication policy and permission form if needed.

The parent/guardian must complete a new “Administration of Medication to Students” form each year and whenever a physician changes the prescription.  This information applies to non-prescription drugs as well as prescription medicines.  Under no circumstances should a student have any medicine (prescription or over-the-counter) in his/her possession during school hours.

FEVER

If your child has a fever they should not return to school until the temperature has remained normal for at least 24 hours.  This precaution is for the well being of your child and his/her classmates.

HEALTH PROGRAM

A Certified School Nurse is available in the Health Office every school day from 8:20am to 3:10pm to care for students and to speak with parents or guardians.  The primary concern’s of the School Nurse is your child’s health and each student’s adjustment to the challenges of growing up.   In keeping with the health program, well-child health screenings will be performed throughout the year.

Whenever there is any change in your child’s health, communicate it to the School Nurse either in writing or by calling (201)441-4837.  The following are examples of which a notification would be appreciated:

·        If your child requires an exam from his/her physician of which the Nurse should

be made aware.

·        If your child is taking a medication, even if it is not during school hours.

·        If your child is diagnosed with a health condition, such as asthma or a fractured bone.

·        If you feel that your child will require medical attention during school hours.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Up-to-date phone numbers and addresses should be provided in writing.  Please be sure the Emergency Form that is sent home each year is reviewed for accuracy.  This form must be signed and returned to your child’s teacher the first day of each school year.  Be sure that the emergency contact person(s) is at home during the day and knows you have listed them for this purpose.  Parents/Guardians will be called first and then the emergency contact person.  It is very important to update this information immediately when employment and/or telephone numbers change.  Please provide as much information as you can.

BREAKFAST and LUNCH PROGRAM

All students are eligible to participate in the Breakfast and Lunch Programs.

The program is being administered this year by Nu-Way Concessionaires and a new system has been implemented for the purchase of meal tickets.  Meals may now be purchased in blocks of 5, 10, 15 or 20 meals.  The school will no longer be sending out a weekly meal order form.  Meal tickets can be used at any time and must be paid for in cash.

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

VISITOR PASSES

Schools have been made aware of the need to pay special attention to school safety because of recent news events.  Parents and the school working together will ensure that school safety policies will succeed.

We ask that you please follow these guidelines:

  -  All Parents and Visitors to the school, must, upon entering the building,

go directly to the Main Office, sign-in, and receive a visitor’s badge.

  -  At the conclusion of your visit, you will be asked to sign-out and return

      your badge.

  -  Access to the school will be permitted only through the front doors of

      the building.

  -  Only the Administration, Faculty, Staff and Students are to be in the

      building without a badge.

  -  No Parents or Visitors are to go directly to any classroom.

Our children’s safety is of the utmost importance; therefore we cannot afford to be lulled into complacency and false security.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PROTOCOL

In the event of an emergency situation, the school will be following the guidelines set forth in the “Crisis Response Handbook” of the Bogota Public School District.  If need be, an emergency evacuation will be executed and all students and staff will report to an alternate site in Bogota.

STUDENT CONDUCT

All students should conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times which respects the rights and welfare of others, the educational program, all school property and the authority of all teachers, administrators and staff members.

Please discuss the following guidelines with your child to make sure he/she understands their responsibilities as a student of LM Steen Elementary School:

-         Follow directions the first time they are given.

-         Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.

-         No name calling, teasing or using vulgar language or signs.

-         Students will not write on or damage school property or any person’s

property.
