FRENCH I                                                                                                FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:  (Grade 8) Credits earned to advance to French II,

not to fulfill World Languages requirement.

Grades: 9 -12

 

French I provides for the development of fundamental language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The vocabulary and grammatical structures presented at this level are aimed at the progressive attainment of these skills. In this course, emphasis is placed on communication and on an introduction to French culture through the study of basic customs and everyday life.

 

 

FRENCH II                                                                                               FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:  French I

Grades: 9-12

 

French II develops an improved awareness and proficiency in audio-lingual skills. The four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed further with increased emphasis on reading comprehension and writing. Basic cultural units are integrated into the program.

 

 

FRENCH III                                                                                              FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:   French II

Grades:  10-12

 

French III reviews the structures previously studied and introduces more advanced linguistic elements to further consolidate communication skills in listening, speaking, and writing. Reading short stories furthers the development of comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. The course explores the heritage of France through its literature, art, history, and contemporary civilization.

 

 

FRENCH IV - HONORS                                                                            FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:   French III

Grades: 11-12

 

French IV is intended to refine and strengthen the language skills developed in French I, II, and III. All grammatical concepts are reviewed and, while the emphasis is on the usage of these concepts in reading, writing, oral communication, short stories and one or two major works of French literature are read, discussed and critiqued orally and in written form in French. Tapes recorded by native French speakers are used to improve listening skills. The course explores the cultural context of the language and literature studied through projects geared to individual interest. Students at this level continue developing an ability to function with reasonable independence in the language.

 

 

 

FRENCH V – AP/HONORS                                                                      FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:  French IV

Grades:    12

 

French V is designed to integrate all previously studied linguistic structures with a further expansion of vocabulary and comprehension skills for students who will take the Advanced Placement Examination and College Achievement Tests. Oral/aural skills will be enhanced through the use of tapes, films, and videos. The course will emphasize the acquisition of oral proficiency and the ability to read a variety of authentic materials. The writing of compositions and a term paper in French will be an integral part of this course.

 

SPANISH I                                                                                               FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:  (Grade 8) Credits earned to advance to Spanish II,

not to fulfill World Languages requirement.

Grades:  9-12

SPANISH III                                                                                             FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

SPANISH IV - HONORS                                                                          FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:   Spanish III

Grades: 11-12

 

Spanish IV provides for the development of proficient language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The vocabulary and grammatical structures presented at this level are aimed at progressive attainment of these skills. In this course, emphasis is placed on communication and an appreciation of Hispanic culture through the reading of literature from various countries. Students at this level continue developing an ability to function with reasonable independence in the language.

 

SPANISH V – AP/HONORS                                                                    FULL YEAR                             5 CREDITS

Prerequisite:  Spanish IV

Grades: 12

 

Spanish V is an Advanced Placement selection. At the termination of the course, students take the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish Language, sponsored by the College Board. The course places a heavy emphasis on refining spoken and written linguistic skills and oral communication. A formal term paper is an additional requirement along with daily assignments designed to reinforce speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Supplemental materials foster cultural awareness.
