HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This program will provide students with a regimen of physical exercise and activity, assist students in the development of physical skills and achievements, encourage students in collaboration and cooperation and instill a lifelong appreciation for physical education. The historical, kinesiological, anatomical, and physiological perspectives of physical education are stressed throughout the instruction of all activities. Activities will include aerobic and anaerobic movement, rhythm movement, individual and dual sports, as well as fitness and conditioning.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
AEROBICS – is designed to create a base of knowledge in aerobic exercises. Emphasis will be on the physiology of exercise, cardiovascular endurance, strength, individual fitness and safety.
BADMINTON - is designed to introduce a life time sport and develop basic skills. Emphasis will be on individual fitness, tumbling routines, rules, terminology and safety.
BASKETBALL - is designed to increase skill development, individual fitness, offensive/defensive strategies, and tournament participation. Emphasis will be on basic/intermediate skills, fitness, rules, terminology and safety practices.
COOPERATIVE GAMES - is designed to introduce mini units in mass games, individual fitness, and unique team sports. Emphasis will be on new basic skills, review of basic/intermediate skills, rules, terminology and safety.
PILO POLO - is designed to increase skill development, offensive/defensive strategies, and tournament participation. Emphasis will be on basic and intermediate skills, individual fitness, rules terminology and safety.
FLAG FOOTBALL -is designed to utilize the basic skills of football in a non contact manner. Emphasis will be on position play, offensive/defensive strategies, rules, terminology and safety.
FLOOR HOCKEY - is designed to increase skill development in Ice Hockey and Field Hockey. Emphasis will be on skills, strategies, tournament participation, individual fitness, rules, terminology and safety.
GOLF - is designed to introduce a life time sport, new basic skills and game strategies. Emphasis will be on skill development, individual fitness, basic strategies, golf etiquette, terms and safety.
SOCCER - is designed to increase skill development, offensive/defensive strategies and tournament participation. Emphasis will be on skills, individual fitness, rules, terminology and safety.
SPEEDBALL – is designed to create and integrated sport combining soccer, basketball, and football skills. Emphasis will be on conversion skills, offensive/defensive strategies, rules terminology and safety.
TEAM HAND BALL - is designed to expose students to a new sport, develop basic skills and participate in modified games. Emphasis is on skill development, offensive/defensive strategies, rules, terminology and safety.
PICKLE BALL – is designed to expose students to a new sport. It is a mix between Ping Pong and Tennis. Emphasis will be on practice skills and intermediate skills, offensive and defensive strategies, tournament participation, rules and safety.
VOLLEYBALL - is designed to develop intermediate skills, increase offensive/defensive strategies and team effectiveness. Emphasis will be on skill development, tournament play, rules
terminology and safety.
WIFFLEBALL - is designed to increase skill development, offensive/defensive strategies and tournament participation. Emphasis will be on intermediate/advanced level skills, rules, terminology and safety.
WRESTLING - is designed to expose, introduce and/or review basic skills, tactics and special procedures. Emphasis will be on individual fitness, tournament participation, rules, terminology and safety.
WEIGHT TRAINING - is designed to create a base of knowledge regarding individual fitness and physiology of exercise. Emphasis will be on individual progress, rules, terminology and safety.
HEALTH EDUCATION
9TH GRADE - The First Aid curriculum will include the value of a safe and healthy life-style. It attempts to alert students to behavior and situations that contribute to risk of injury and illness and to motivate them to take precautions. They will identify ways to prevent injury and illness, recognize when an emergency has occurred and provide basic care for injury or sudden illness until the victim can receive professional medical help.
10TH GRADE – Driver Education consists of the New Jersey State required classroom instruction in driver education which provides the foundation for the State Driver’s License Exam. Emphasis is on the basic principles of safe driving including the qualities of a good driver, the laws of nature, driving environments, road courtesy, the state laws of safe driving, appreciation for preventive maintenance and the development of safe driving attitudes.
HEALTH 11/Family Living - The eleventh grade Health Course will include human anatomy and physiology, dating, sexual behavior, rape prevention, marriage, abstinence contraception, pregnancy and birth, sexually transmitted diseases, drug/alcohol use, misuse , and abuse, heart disease, AIDS education, and decision making skills.
HEALTH 12/Family Life – The twelfth grade Health course broadens students’ awareness on such topics as drug/alcohol addiction, sexual abuse and AIDS. It emphasizes the concept that maturity implies responsible behavior and reflects a person’s level of growth in meeting the challenges of society. The purpose of the course is to help prepare the seniors for life after graduation.
