Sample Activities:

·       An individual wants to select a career pathway….in an area of interest for future employment and postsecondary and lifelong learning.

·       Choose your "Dream Job". Research the position and write a one-page paper describing the nature of the job. Orally share this information with classmates. They also state why they have chosen this particular career. Students fill out an application, create a resume, and compose a letter of interest to be sent to an imaginary head of human resources (another student) working in the dream company. Upon completion of the three forms, students team up with another classmate to take turns playing the role of a human resource person. Students review and critique one another’s portfolio. Based on the employment package, the students decide whether or not they would consider each other for an interview. Emphasis is placed on positive feedback and students are encouraged to give helpful, constructive advice if employment packages are not strong.

·       Go to DECA, www.deca.org, for local, state and national competitions, for an activity example: Customer Service competition. Students fill out an application and undergo interview role-plays with adult judges. DECA events occur at various times of the year predetermined by DECA administration. Structured Learning Experiences (SLE) also provide excellent opportunities for students to fill out applications, compose cover letters, and create resumes for paid or non-paid internships in the local community. This activity occurs on an individual basis when students demonstrate a certain level of maturity and work readiness.

·       Dream Interview: After having completed the "Dream Job" activity, students will revise and finalize their application, cover letter, and resume. They will utilize these portfolios (packages) in a role-playing mock interview session in which all students will play the role of both the interviewer and the interviewee. Students that are not involved in the two-person role-play will act as observers, checking off behaviors on a teacher-generated checklist and recording their impressions. After each role-play session, the class will verbally share positive comments and identify areas that need revision.

·       After reading "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Coyle, give the students two writing assignments. The first is a resume summing up Sherlock Holmes's skills and abilities for employment. The second assignment is to write a letter of recommendation from a satisfied customer, in this case Helen Stoner, Holmes's client in the story, recommending Holmes's services. Teacher goes over a resume format to include name, address, and heading with information such as Objective, Skills and Achievement, Employment History, and Education/Training. Teacher will need to give correct components of a business letter for the second part of the assignment.
