Sample Activities:

 

·       Statistics indicate that drugs have an impact on worker productivity and safety. Develop a program or campaign focusing on the reduction of substance abuse in the community and in the workplace.

 

·       An individual wants to select a career pathway….in an area of interest for future employment and postsecondary and lifelong learning.

 

·       Career Choices of Famous African Americans

 

·       Careers-It’s Not Just for Grownups!

 

·       Select a career and role play a scenario depicting why people do this work and how it benefits others. Discuss role plays in class.

 

·       Teacher reads a story to the class. Discuss the character’s occupation and responsibilities.

 

·       Being responsible is an important trait needed for a fourth grade student. Have the student rate themselves on the following items:

I keep up with all my assignments. Always Sometimes Never
I follow class and school rules. Always Sometimes Never
I do my chores at home. Always Sometimes Never
I do my chores without being told. Always Sometimes Never
I take care of my belongings. Always Sometimes Never

Discuss the importance of the responsibilities as they relate to work of a student and work in the community.

 

·       Discuss the impact of sex-role stereotyping on both males and females. Poll the students on the following:
·       Should women who have children work outside the home?
·       Should men and women share equally in such household chores as doing the laundry, painting, preparing meals, looking after children, cleaning, and mowing the lawn, etc.?
·       Do most men like having their wives work outside the home?  Why?  Why not?
·       Do most women work so they can buy “extras” for themselves, their homes, and their families?  Explain your answer.
·       Does everyone want to get married some day?  Explain your answer.
·       Should men and women earn money equally?  Explain your answer.
·       Do men and women work for the same reasons?

 

·       Discuss reasons for differences in the opinions of the boys and girls. Discuss reasons for considering non-traditional careers by writing journal entries. 

 

·       Investigate occupational roles of men and women in other cultures.

 

·       Make a bulletin board showing non-traditional career choices.
